Merry Christmas!

I've been a little bit lapse in blogging the past couple of days mainly because it's been the usual last minute rush for Christmas. However, the healthy eating hasn't been completely forgotten with homemade minestrone soup for lunch which had lots of different vegetables in it and a 25 minute run this morning. Plus, this afternoon, we are gong for a swim.

I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and will be running food clubs on the following dates for those of you who need to lose the Christmas excess:

Monday 7th: Launch of the food club at Molly's (Godfrey's Garden Centre, J31 of the M1)

Monday 14th: Molly's food club kicks off at 7pm

Wednesday 16th: Sheffield food club at Zest, Upperthorpe, 7:30pm

Thursday 17th: Chesterfeld food club at 7:30pm

If you would like to come along, please email info@wisechoicenutrition.co.uk for more information.

Merry Christmas from The Real Food Club

Rain rain go away

I don't know about you but I am sick of the rain. Someone said it's better than the ice and that's true but I am fed up of arriving everywhere looking like a drowned rat. Yes, that's a very British thing to do, complaining about the weather but it's getting a little tedious now!

Today I had a meeting at Pure on Raw in Sheffield which is a new raw food cafe that's opened. honestly did wonder what raw food would be like but it is amazing! The flavours and textures are fantastic and some of the dishes are so creative. Plus, they do the most amazing smoothies which are great for giving your immune system a boost.

So what have I eaten today?

Breakfast: Porridge with chopped banana

Snack: Mince pie

Lunch: Parsnip soup and white chocolate flapjack (from Tamper Coffee)

Smoothie from Pure on Raw

Dinner: Pork casserole with roasted butternut squash, carrots, parsnips and red and yellow peppers

Tomorrow I'm going to do a 30 minute workout with a friend which should be great. We'll see how unfit I really am! Although, I did almost powerwalk back from town today and it's all up hill from Shalesmoor to my house!

Tuesday and Wednesday combined

Things are a little busy this week and I only remembered to blog at about midnight last night so decided to combine today's and yesterdays together. I am so disorganised when it comes to Christmas. Everyone else seems to be sorted but I'm sure there are some other people out there who haven't written cards and bought presents.
Tonight's blog is only short but shows you can have a bit everything in moderation and don't need to eat all the pies!

Tuesday breakfast: Porridge with chopped banana, 3 almonds

Lunch: Jacket potato with cheese and salad

Dinner: Chicken and veg casserole type creation (made by a lovely friend and very tasty), 1 beer (home brew I think)

Snack: carrot sticks

Wednesday breakfast: porridge with chopped banana, 3 almonds

Lunch: Chicken kiev and salad

Dinner: Chicken and leek pie with mash and mushy pies, glass of white wine, pint of beer

I've not eaten as many fruit and vegetables the past couple of days so going to make an effort to do that tomorrow even though I'm out almost all day. The pork casserole is defrosting meaning I just need to roast some veg and dinner's made.

A rare day off

Yesterday, I had a day off! A friend of mine had bought me a pamper session for my birthday and I'd finally made an appointment to use it and meet her. We went to Face Facts in Bakewell which was lovely followed by lunch out and an afternoon of catching up then an evening of watching films. What more could you want? My friends who have supported me on this business journey are very special to me and spending time with them is wonderful. The joy of self employment is you can schedule time out of the office to do things like that. I'm spending the weekend in the Peak District with one of my best friends from uni. Although I love Sheffield, there's nothing better than a change of scenery even if I am still working!

What do you do to get away? How much time out do you take? Even if it's just a hot bath and a film once a week, it's really important to look after you! I found that I managed to switch off from work completely for a couple of hours which I normally struggle with even if I'm not actually sat working.

Being out and about with friends does mean the healthy eating was less healthy but everything in moderation!

Breakfast: Banana

Lunch: Derbyshire oatcake with Mediterranean vegetables and brie, side salad

Dinner: Nachos, chilli with rice, 2 glasses rose wine, 1 small bottle cider and a few chocolate smiles

Have a lovely weekend

My 1st Christmas dinner of 2012

I had my first Christmas dinner of 2012 today at B for B Ladies lunch group. The group meets at the Royal Victoria Holiday Inn in Sheffield and the lunch was delicious. It was a buffet style which was great as you could pile on the meat and veggies, lay off the potatoes and pick up some fruit too. They even put on free wine but as I was driving I only had a small glass. It's probably the most festive I've felt so far and the group are lovely.

Recently, I've been struggling to sleep at night but not in the mornings! Lots of people seem to be finding it a struggle with the dark mornings and freezing cold temperatures. But, it's not long until the shortest day!

Today I've eaten:

Breakfast: Muesli with semi skimmed milk, 3 almonds

Lunch: 2 slices turkey, 1 roast potato, 2 mini pigs in blankets, 2 stuffing balls, carrots and brussel sprouts followed by pate, brie and cheddar (small pieces!) with 3 crackers and a slice of chocolate swiss roll

Dinner: Chilli con carne with rice, pear

I'm amazed I had room for dinner after lunch but I didn't have huge portions so was able to enjoy what I ate without being ridiculously full afterwards. Portion control is key to not putting weight on over the Christmas period. Take a little of everything and see if you are still hungry after you've eaten rather than having a huge portion and forcing yourself to eat it.

We're still alive...

So, they world was meant to end today but as it's nearly 8pm when I'm writing this I don't think it will end today!
I seem to have been really hungry today and feel like I've eaten loads but I did go for a lovely, brisk walk in the little bit of sunshine we had this afternoon. Getting out when the sun's shining will do wonders for your mood. Although at this time of year the sun isn't strong enough to give us vitamin D, being outside and exercising has been shown to help reduce depression or prevent it.
Yesterday I made a pork casserole for some work I'm doing so I've put the recipe below for you to try.

400g diced pork
1 red onion, peeled and chopped
2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
½ swede
2 carrots
1 green pepper
Pinch of mixed herbs
Freshly ground black pepper
1 stock cube
400ml water

Serve with freshly steamed seasonal vegetables.

1.       Fry the onion, garlic and pork in a little olive oil. Add the swede, carrots and pepper then transfer to a slow cooker and add the remaining ingredients or follow the steps below.
2.       Preheat the oven to 160OC.
3.       Stir in the stock cube, water and herbs and transfer to an ovenproof dish. Place in the preheated oven for 2 ½ hours until cooked.

But what else have I eaten today? Well:

Breakfast: Muesli with youghurt, 3 almonds

Snack: Apple and an energy ball (coconut, raisin and dates)

Lunch: Homemade butternut squash soup with 1 small slice of wholemeal spelt bread

Snack: Kiwi and a chocolate beetroot brownie

Dinner: Pork casserole, jacket potato, broccoli and a cereal bar

Have you done your 30 minutes exercise today? Do you mind it makes a difference to how you feel?

Sheffield Food Club

Today, it looks like we have a venue for the Sheffield Real Food Club sorted. It will hopefully be at Zest on a Thursday evening. Things should be confirmed by the end of this week so keep watching the blog and tell all your friends!

I don't know about manic Mondays, I think manic Tuesday is more appropriate for today! On the plus side though, I've had some very exciting meetings and walked at least 4 miles. I have eaten hardly any fruit or vegetables though so I will make up for that tomorrow with lots. I also feel quite bloated which may be down to what I've eaten too.

So, today I've had:

Breakfast: Porridge, 2 brazil nuts

Lunch: leftover turkey parcels from last night

Snack: Vegetables crisps and 1 raisin and coconut ball

Dinner: 1 chicken sandwich (1/4 of a round) on wholemeal bread, 6 chips and lots of salad plus red cabbage coleslaw at a buffet and a small Christmas pudding and chocolate truffle

Have you managed to eat your 5 a day today?

Make it Happen Monday

Welcome to the start of another exciting week! Once a month, a group of South Yorkshire business people meet for an event called Make It Happen Monday which leaves you inspired and focussed on your business with a plan of action for the next month. Today was one of those Mondays and I certainly feel inspired especially after meeting with Jo from Molly's where we do our Monday night Food Club to talk about next year. We have lots of exciting things lined up so do join us on a Monday night at 7pm.

This week I've lost 2lbs which I'm really pleased about as I have been sensible with my eating, drunk a lot less wine and still not had a fizzy drink. I don't miss them at all now and am doing myself a lot of favours cutting them out as hopefully my bones will not be affected.

I had a mammoth sandwich today meaning I wasn't really hungry tonight and then Jo made some delicious leftover parcels using croissant dough and filo pastry which we ate at food club so I've eaten:

Breakfast: porridge with 2 brazil nuts

Lunch: ham and cheese sandwich with salad and a handful of crisps

Dinner: turkey and veg parcel

If you would like to find out more about food club or Make it Happen Monday please email info@wisechoicenutrition.co.uk

Chilled out Sundays

Today's been a relaxing Sunday even though I've been working. I've also spent time reading a book on NLP which will help me improve my skills when working with one to one clients and a book which a friend lent to me in the Summer.

The cold weather seems to be making me hungry! I've eaten more fruit today though as everyone seems to be reporting colds and flu which I definitely don't want to spoil my Christmas!

Here's what I've eaten today:

Breakfast: porridge with chopped banana

Lunch: Poached eggs on wholemeal spelt toast (from Cat Lane Bakery, Sheffield)

Snack: kiwi fruit, 2 brazil nuts and a chocolate beetroot brownie

Dinner: Beef casserole with lots of roasted veggies.

Hot chocolate

I added a sprinkling of cumin to the roast vegetables and it makes them really tasty. I'd definitely recommend it to bring out the flavour. I used potato, parsnip, carrots, yellow pepper and red onion.

Hope you've had a great weekend

Hannah

PS Don't forget it's Food Club tomorrow night at Molly's (J31, M1) email info@wisechoicenutrition.co.uk for more details

Saturday 8 December 2012

Super Saturday

It might be the weekend but that's no excuse for not eating healthily. That said, I haven't managed to eat my 5 a day and have had wine but nonetheless, the soup was healthy and muesli is good too.
I've had a day doing work and planning for 2013 which is not something I normally do in business!
Today I've eaten:

Breakfast: Muesli with semi skimmed milk

Lunch: 2 poached eggs with tomatoes

Dinner: Homemade soup with jacket potato, glass of rose wine

It's great having batch cooked the soup as it's in the freezer and instead of eating junk, I can eat something nourishing and healthy. I'd really recommend cooking in batches and freezing. Not only does it save time, it saves money too as you don't rely on takeaways or ready meals for the nights you don't know what to eat.

Hope you're having a great weekend

Friday

It's Friday and I couldn't think of a creative name for today's blog. As I have a weekend of work planned it's not really the weekend either for me. I have decorated the Christmas tree tonight which is possibly too big for the lounge but it was my Grandad's and it has happy memories.

Seeing as it's Friday, I treated myself to a glass of rose wine with dinner which was lovely but I still have some left for tomorrow too. Everywhere I've been, temptation was there today! I was in a cafe earlier and there was gorgeous looking cake then went to another cafe for another meeting and everyone had wine! It was only 2pm which even for a Friday is a bit early I think.

Today I've really enjoyed my meals. I ate:

Breakfast: Muesli with 2 brazil nuts

Lunch: Sausage sandwich (naughty but nice)

Dinner: Beef casserole with jacket potato and broccoli plus a glass of wine.

Have a lovely weekend

Curry night

Tonight's blog is short and sweet as I am shattered. I had some friends over for wine and curry which was lovely. I made the curry from scratch using a Madhur Jaffrey recipe for baked chicken curry which has yoghurt and spices rather than coconut milk so it's really healthy.

I've also been working on a new logo and look forward to revealing it soon once the finishing touches have been done by the designer.

Today I ate:

Breakfast: Porridge with chopped banana

Lunch: Onion soup with a white bread roll

Snack: Apple and 2 brazil nuts

Dinner: Chicken curry, sag aloo and 4 popadoms plus 1/2 bottle white wine

It was lovely to cook a curry from scratch and they are so much tastier and healthier than take aways without taking up lots of time and effort. I would strongly recommend trying one out.

Cake cake cake

Today has been another day of cravings and struggling with healthy eating but I have tried really hard to be good and except from the cake it has been ok. I don't think it helps that I didn't go out until 5:30pm so I had quite a long time just at home working and doing the really boring task of sorting my email inboxes. Anyway, overall I didn't do too badly

Breakfast: Muesli with semi skimmed milk, 2 brazil nuts

Lunch: Poached eggs on wholemeal spelt bread, coffee cake

Dinner: Homemade veggie burgers, handful of oven chips, salad, kiwi fruit

Not sure I will have eaten my five a day. The veggie burgers are made from pure vegetables though which increases the fibre content. Chips tend to be thought of as really unhealthy but a few oven chips now and again is not bad. Frying chips increases the content and there is never any need to add oil to oven chips. As I say in The Real Food Club, a little bit of what you fancy is good for you.

Hope you've had a great day. Please leave any comments and thoughts you may have.

Cravings

Right now I'm having massive cravings for the cake and chocolate which I know is in the cupboard. My Mum and step Dad came over for a quick visit to Sheffield and bought a couple of slices of coffee cake with them plus I have 2 boxes of chocolates which are just calling my name. But I will resist and make myself a hot chocolate once I've written this blog. Although I say you should have a treat, I went out for lunch and have had cheese and chocolate beetroot brownies (just a tiny slice but enough) plus I am not in the slightest bit hungry after dinner.

If you're having cravings, try to distract yourself from them. Go for a walk or call a friend or read a book to try and take your mind off them. If you decide you are going to treat yourself, make sure you can easily limit how much you have. Opening a box of chocolates when you really crave them will probably end up in you eating most of them. Opt for a small amount which is measurable and be really tough with yourself on sticking to it.

I have walked into Sheffield and all round Sheffield and then home again at speed. We went to Tamper Coffee for lunch which is heavenly. If you haven't been, it's just off West Street near Nando's. I can't remember the name of the little road it's on. They do amazing food and coffee at very reasonable prices.

Today, I ate:

Breakfast: Porridge with chopped banana

Snack: tiny piece of brownie

Lunch: 1/2 brie and crankberry sandwich, 1/2 steak pie (small)

Snack: kiwi fruit, thin slice of cheese

Dinner: Salmon and vegetable stir fry

What do you crave? Sweet or savoury?

Week 1 done

So week one is done and according to the scales I've lost 4lbs in a week. I'm lucky that I lose weight quickly but can also put it on quickly. However, as you've seen from previous posts I have eaten sensibly and generally been quite healthy having walked into town 5 times in a week too (20 miles in total). I haven't done my measurements today as I forgot. I meant to do that at Food Club but only remembered in the car on the way home! I will do them tomorrow and report back.

This morning I woke feeling exhausted and a bit run down which is probably the effects of Saturday night but by the end of the day, I'm feeling much better after some decent food. Today I ate:

Breakfast: Muesli with yoghurt and banana, 2 brazil nuts

Lunch: 1 scrambled egg, steamed spinach and tomatoes

Snack: Apple and 1/2 cereal bar

Dinner: 1 slice haggis terrine and 2 small vegetables kebabs (pepper, cucumber and couscous stuffed cherry tomatoes) at Food Club followed vegetable stirfry at home

If you would like to join the Real Food Club and experience how good healthy eating can make you feel, email info@wisechoicenutrition.co.uk or call Hannah on 07912 556470. We currently run one at Molly's tea room (Godfrey's Garden Centre, J31 of the M1) and will be starting one in Chesterfield and Sheffield in the New Year,

Sunday 2 December 2012

The morning after the night before

Today I have been really healthy again (with the exception of a couple of cakes at a friend's baby shower). Normally, I would have eaten tonnes of carbs and rubbish on a post drinking day but I resisted the temptation and ate properly.

It's important to replenish your body after abusing it to help it recover. This doesn't necessarily just mean from alcohol but an intense gym workout will require good nutrition to help the body recover and get the most from the work out.

Tomorrow is weigh in day and I'm also going to do my measurements. Weight loss is great but it's also about your body composition. What you really want to see is fat loss which is obviously more difficult to measure. You will notice fat loss more if you combine healthy eating with exercise as fat becomes muscle. This doesn't necessarily translate to weight loss though as muscle weighs more then fat.`

Here's today's diet diary:

Breakfast: Muesli with yoghurt

Lunch: 3 small sandwiches, 2 cakes, 3 grapes

Dinner: Sweet potato with a little butter and a bowl of butternut squash, carrot and red pepper soup.

Have a great week!

Hannah

PS Remember, if you want to feel great then you need to eat great too.

It's officially Christmas!

I didn't blog yesterday because when I get in from a rare night out I was possibly a little incapable of writing anything that would make sense. I don't condone binge drinking but let's face it, most of us do it just some more regularly than others. Yesterday. we went to the Christmas Market at Kelham Island which was fantastic then on into town for dinner and drinks. It was lovely spending the day catching up with friends especially one who we don't see as much because she lives down South.

I was pretty good with eating it was just the drinking that was not so great. I drank 5 glasses of wine and an archers and cranberry!! Plus a cup of mulled wine. Not good but I won't drinking much for a while so my liver can recover.

Here's what I ate:

Breakfast: Porridge with chopped banana

Lunch: 1/4 pizza, cucumber and carrot sticks plus a few crisps and a little bit of sour cream and chive dip. Chocolate beetroot brownie.

Dinner: Feta, olives and spinach balls followed by chicken risotto.

The food was delicious at La Gondola on Carver Street. We didn't have dessert because we were full and I was very pleased I didn't start ordering cheesy chips on the way home!

Back to being good again today

Hannah

Friday 30 November 2012

A little treat

Friday today and the end of another busy week. However, I feel really good. Physically and mentally I fee so much better than I did when I started this on Monday. The most important thing this week is, I haven't been hungry.

Today, I went to Meadowhall to see the Coca Cola lorry with an old uni friend. We then had dinner at the Thai restaurant there (I can't remember the name) which was delicious. Although it's an all you can eat, they have much smaller plates (side plate size) so even if you go up 4 times you still don't eat much. The food is also freshly cooked and much more tasty than your standard all you can eat. I also had a cheeky glass of wine but, I did walk to the station and back which is about 4 miles in total. Unlike when you normally leave the Chinese, I wasn't stuffed and unable to move. I felt comfortably full after 2 1/2 plates of food. I really like the use of smaller plates too and the fact there isn't a massive choice but the food is full of flavour and fresh vegetables too.

Here's today's diet diary:

Breakfast: Muesli with banana and semi skimmed milk

Lunch: yesterday's butternut squash soup, 2 brazil nuts, orange, small piece of chocolate brownie

Dinner: Thai all you can eat: chicken curry soup, 1 battered chicken piece, 2 sweetcron cakes, curried vegetables, chicken curry, chicken in cashew nuts, noodles and plain rice. Glass of white wine

Hope you have all had a great week. Please feel free to comment on the blog

Another breakfast networking...

Today began at 5:30 am when I surfaced for another breakfast networking event. It was absolutely freezing this morning! Despite an awful nights sleep, I wasn't too tired. I am really feeling the effects of eating well again and now I know I can manage on little sleep if I eat real food.

This mornings breakfast was a buffet again but has the option of a more continental style breakfast too. There's quite a bit of fruit too which I really fancied with some yoghurt. I made some delicious butternut squash, carrot and red pepper soup for lunch.  I also finished the day with more networking which I took chocolate beetroot brownies too. Although it's been a long and busy day, I'm not actually that tired but I seem to have gone past eating dinner and made do with a small sandwich.

So, here's what I ate:

Breakfast: Mixed fruit (4 types) with yoghurt, 2 poached eggs, grilled tomatoes, baked beans and mushrooms

Lunch: Homemade soup (as above), spoonful of raw brownie mixture followed by a small piece of brownie (for quality assurance purposes only)

Dinner: 1 small cheese sandwich on wholemeal bread, 1 small piece brownie, 1 mince pie

Although dinner wasn't great, I still haven't drunk alcohol or fizzy drinks and I did plan to have beef casserole but just wasn't hungry. I have also eaten lots of fruit and veg without even trying.

If you would like the soup or brownie recipe please email info@wisechoicenutrition.co.uk

It continues... Day 3

Wow I feel so much better both physically and mentally. Of course, I know healthy eating makes a real difference to how you feel but sometimes it's easy to forget. Added to that, the sun was out and I had an exciting email too.

I'm finding I don't even crave unhealthy food any more and I'm not tempted by it either. I did have a really small piece of Bailey's cheesecake tonight and I really enjoyed it but it was enough and I didn't want more.

Also, I went shopping in my local shop, Beeches of Walkley rather than the Asda and was pleasantly surprised how much I got for money.

Here's my shopping list:

1lb stewing steak
2 chicken breasts
4 carrots
2 sweet potatoes
4 kiwis
3 russet apples
6 bananas
2 parsnips
3 peppers
6 eggs
Beetroot
Spinach
large pot of yoghurt
1 pint of Our Cow Molly Milk
Brazil nuts

The whole lot came to just under £20 which I was really impressed with. The quality is much better and it will last too plus it's probably much fresher than a supermarket.

So, here's what I ate today. I'm not going to put drinks in because I drink loads of water and a lot less coffee than I used to!

Breakfast: porridge with chopped banana

Lunch: 2 poached eggs on a bed of spinach

Snack: small piece of cheese

Dinner: Beef casserole with sweet potato and broccoli, small piece of Bailey's cheesecake

Snack: pear and yoghurt

What have you done today that's healthy?

Hannah

Tuesday 27 November 2012

Day 2

So day 2 of eating healthily began with a breakfast networking event. It was a buffet style full English which is great if you're trying to eat less and make healthier choices. I've also spent some time helping friends who were flooded. We needed to shift all the books from downstairs to upstairs which was a good workout! Overall, today has been another healthy day. I haven't felt hungry and already feel much better for it.

Here's what I ate today:

Breakfast: 1 slice of white toast with butter, 1 sausage, 1 spoonful baked beans, 1 spoonful                  scrambled egg, a grilled tomato and 2 cups of coffee

                    Pint of water

                    Apple

                    Lemon and ginger tea

Lunch: Homemade butternut squash soup

            Decaff coffee

            2 pints water

            Thing slice of cheese

Dinner: Rice with beef and vegetable chilli, broccoli

            Hot chocolate

           1 pint of water

How was your day? How has the food you've eaten made you feel? Tired or full of life?

My weight loss journey

It may only be 4 weeks until Christmas but it isn't too late to lose weight. Realistically you could lose around 8lbs if you eat sensibly and exercise. Over the past few months my weight has crept up after I had to stop running because of an operation. So, it's time to shift it and get back into my clothes again.

It's Monday 26th November and I weight 10st10 which is about the heaviest I have ever been I think. I've woken up feeling exhausted and it's time to change things starting from now. With that in mind, I need to eat much better and much less than I have been so here's what I ate today:

Breakfast: porridge with chopped banana

1 coffee, 2 pints of water

                  pear

                  1 lemon and ginger tea

                  1 black coffee

Lunch:  2 slices wholemeal toast with 2 eggs scrambled, thin scraping of butter

               1 pint of water

                1 lemon and ginger tea

2 black coffees at food club

Dinner: Spanish chicken (chicken with tomatoes and red peppers)

              1 pot of chopped peaches

              1 pint of water

Not bad for day one. I also walked into town and back which is a fast half hour walk each way. I feel much healthier already and have not drunk anywhere near as much coffee as I would normally. Let's see how tomorrow goes especially as I'm at a breakfast networking meeting!

If you would like any recipes or advice, please email info@wisechoicenutrition.co.uk

Welcome

Hello and welcome to The Real Food Club blog. The Real Food Club began in October 2012 and is, as the name suggests, about eating real food.

Although some of our members are looking to lose weight, some are also looking to lead healthier ;lifestyles and feed their families healthy meals. We focus more on what you eat now how much weight you have lost as weight loss can be deceiving and it is in fact fat which you really want to be losing.

We currently meet on a Monday night at Molly's Tea Room (Godfrey's Garden Centre, just of J31 of the M1) at 7pm. We begin with a weigh in and measurements (once a month), discuss our weeks and what we've done well with and not so well with and then I talk about our theme for the week.

The sessions cost £5.50 and include drinks plus a taster of a healthy recipe, 3 recipes plus breakfast and lunch ideas and access to a qualified nutritionist who can help you eat healthily and sensibly.

If you would like to know more about The Real Food Club and start changing your lifestyle today, email info@wisechoicenutrition.co.uk or call Hannah on 07912 556470.
